Constructed of local stone and hidden among the foothills of the Serra de Tramuntana – just a short distance from the Mediterranean – La Residencia is one of the island’s crown jewels. You’ll feel like family when you make yourself at home in your traditionally decorated bedroom or in the eclectic Designer Suite by Matthew Williamson. The hotel also has 30 acres of olive groves and produces its own olive oil. Be sure to visit the spa and to admire the original Miró paintings on display at Café Miró. Younger guests can enjoy a delightful Mallorcan adventure at the supervised children’s club.

A superb refurbishment of an impressive 19th-century fortress has resulted in a captivating and singular, adults-only boutique hotel overlooking the Bay of Palma. Set in 88 acres and stretching along the coastline for two kilometres, Cap Rocat Mallorca is a spectacular hotel providing a collection of stunning rooms and suites, a selection of magical dining venues, private rock cliff beach with direct access to the sea, jetty and salt water pool.
Both the architecture and setting of Cap Rocat is sensational. Wonderfully secluded with a drawbridge, bunkers and suites in former shooting buttresses, the atmosphere is both historic and romantic. Decorated with a clever blend of contemporary and classic furnishings, suites have their own private patio with beautiful sea views.

The recent addition of the hotel allows for more guests to enjoy this fabulous location.
Richard Branson’s latest dreamscape, Son Bunyola, is worth the splurge. Three spacious, traditional Balearic villas (one has five bedrooms, the others four) lie sprawled across 680 acres on Mallorca’s northwest coast. Each has its own heated pool, sleek kitchen, and courtyard with dining area, although Son Balagueret – housing a bedroom in the original 13th-century turret – has its own magic. The lush estate includes vineyards, olive groves, and citrus orchards; you can walk to the beach, hike and bike on miles of mountain trails, or play some of the island’s almost two dozen golf courses.

Nobis Hotels always offer a great experience.
Bridging the old world and the new isn’t an easy feat. Try too hard to honor the past and you’ll end up with a museum, but forge ahead a smidge too far and it can feel soulless. But then there’s Nobis Hotel Palma, a boutique hotel with a fresh feel snuggled inside a 12th-century Muslim palace. The 37 rooms and suites display a hushed sophistication, where stone walls and wood floors are the foundation for a pared-down, Danish-inspired design. From the spa to the sun terrace, it’s all about relaxation at this Mallorcan gem. Multiple dining and drinking venues are present, none more dramatic than the Nobis Rooftop with its spectacular sunset views.

The foothills of Mallorca’s spectacular Tramuntana mountain range provide a suitably grand backdrop for Castell Son Claret, a 19th-century castle on an estate that spans more than 300 acres of gardens and untouched parkland. A 2023 renovation turned this historic house into a thoroughly luxurious 43-unit boutique hotel, decorated in an understatedly elegant contemporary style.
Its suites and rooms are divided between the main house and a variety of outbuildings, and they range in size from the compact Courtyard Single to the two suites with private pools and the Castell Suite, with space for four guests. The details differ but the experience is uniformly high-end. Castell Son Claret is not strictly adults-only, but nor does it go far out of its way to cater to children; the result is a hotel that’s suitable for families but with a tranquility that’s difficult to achieve in an all-ages environment.

Uncovering Mallorca’s Unspoiled Coastlines, Storied Art Enclaves, and Many Eccentric Personalities
No historical plaque marks the spot known as Platja des Franceses, or Frenchman’s Beach, on the Spanish island of Mallorca. In fact, as I turned off a back road in the warm haze of a late summer’s afternoon, there was little to distinguish it from other parts of Alcúdia Bay, a roughly eight-and-a-half-mile-long arc of soft sand and gently lapping crystal-clear waters. Like most corners of the Mediterranean in July, it was a genial hubbub of families playing, lovers smooching, and sun worshippers lazing. But I recognized the location, framed by a shady grove of pine trees with a headland in the distance, from murky black-and-white holiday photographs and a flickering Super 8 movie I’d watched on YouTube.
