It’s easy to miss, wedged between Germany, France, and Belgium, but with more than 3,000 miles of pathways, this tiny country is home to some of Europe’s best and most accessible hiking. Case in point: The Escapardenne Eislek Trail in the northern Éislek region was recently named the first Leading Quality Trail in Europe by the European Ramblers Association, a designation that deems it one of Europe’s most beautiful destinations for walking. With public transportation that neatly crisscrosses the entire country, it’s easy to start in Luxembourg City before heading out into nature. Luxembourgers call the Mullerthal region, along the country’s western border with Germany, Little Switzerland for its enigmatic forests and valleys. And the southern Minett region, once the site of iron-ore mines, is now a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, walkable via the new 60-mile Minett Trail that snakes along the French border. Along the route, trekkers can overnight in Kabaisercher (hiking lodges) on the route, housed in old schoolhouses, train carriages, and cabins that hover over the water of former steelworks cooling ponds.

18 Place d’Armes, Luxembourg City
Size: 28 rooms and suites
Style: Contemporary Classic & Lively
There’s no place quite like Luxembourg City, so it’s fitting that one of its finest hotels should be an unusual one; Hotel Le Place d’Armes is built from a string of seven 18th-century buildings, joined together right in the historic center of town. Its warrenlike interiors contain a mere 28 rooms and suites, where period architectural details like stone walls and timbered ceilings contrast with contemporary furnishings and fixtures. Along with its bundles of personality it’s got all the comforts of a much larger luxury hotel, including, among its restaurants, the Michelin-starred Le Cristallerie.

Luxembourg City Urban Garden
May 10 – October 18, 2025
Animals of the Mind is a contemporary art trail conceived as part of Luxembourg Urban Garden (LUGA), a city-wide open-air exhibition of urban gardens, landscape projects, and art installations in Luxembourg. Inspired by the LUGA theme, “Making the invisible visible,” it takes the form of twelve site-specific sculptures, installations, video works, performances, and interventions revolving around our complex relationships with animals.
