Y’All Get Ready For A Good Ol’ Time
Home of football as a religion and barbecue as a food group, Texas has reason to boast everything being bigger in the largest American state. From live music and indie cafes in Austin to the Dallas Cowboys and the famous Fort Worth stockyards in North Texas, the mega-state has something to offer to everyone. Try floating the river, gallivanting on Galveston beaches, or hiking through the impeccable Texas Hill Country.
Comfort, Texas / North of San Antonio
Roughly equidistant from Austin and San Antonio, in the Hill Country of central Texas, the town* of Comfort does its level best to live up to its name. In fact it just might be the coziest little Census Designated Place we’ve ever driven through. With the advent of Camp Comfort, however, there’s an excellent reason to stop for a while.
This former bowling alley was established in 1901, which we’d have thought was before bowling was really a thing; thus it’s spared the utilitarian strip-mall style of the typical mid-century bowling alley, opting for something a bit more rustic and hand-made. Today they call it a “boutique bed and breakfast,” and they do not misspeak. Finely weathered wood is everywhere, brought to life by some colorful modern furniture, and while you wouldn’t mistake it for the Four Seasons, the accommodations are perfectly comfortable, and quite large, to boot.
