There’s plenty of neoclassical opulence on the shores of Lake Como, and historic villas, too — though, these days, the centuries-old architecture is outnumbered by extravagant imitations. Thankfully the team behind Il Sereno, including celebrated Milan-based designer Patricia Urquiola, is taking things in a bold new direction. Though it’s built on the foundation of an old stone boathouse, Il Sereno is a modern marvel both inside and out. “That sunny, happy place”—that’s how Greta Garbo described the Grand Hotel Tremezzo in the 1932 film Grand Hotel. And who could possibly disagree?
Since 1910, the Grand Hotel Tremezzo has embodied a dream. Initially, it was the vision of cosmopolitan pioneers Maria and Enea Gandola, who sought to make Lake Como an essential stop on the Grand Tour by creating a hotel with an international spirit. Since 1975, that dream has lived on through the De Santis family, who brought their distinctive vision of Italian hospitality to the lakeshore.

The shoreline of Italy’s Lake Como is dotted with splendid hotels and imposing villas that offer absolutely first-rate everything. Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni sits comfortably at the head of this five-star class. Located in the upscale town of Bellagio at the tip of the promontory where the legendary lake forks, Villa Serbelloni offers flawless luxury that’s been carefully refined since the hotel’s transition from a palatial residence in 1873.
The 85 guest rooms vary in size from spacious to cavernous, and the motif is heavy on undiluted Neo-classical elements, gilded mirrors and ornate ceiling frescoes. Period furniture abounds, with nary a sleek modern intruder to be found. Lush, heavy curtains open to reveal commanding views of Lake Como.
