The Greek Aegean Sea includes over 4,000 islands and islets scattered in the Cyclades, Dodecanese and Sporades, of which only 200 (or so) islands are inhabited. The Greek coastline offers a diverse landscape: beaches stretching over many kilometres, sheltered bays and coves, sandy beaches, sand-dunes, pebble beaches, wetlands and deltas, caves formed by seawater and dark-coloured sand in volcanic areas.

Kolympithres Naoussa, Paros
Size: 33 rooms and suites
Style: Contemporary / Indigenous / Zen
Seasonal Operations: Property is closed during the winter season
Attempting to rank the Greek islands strikes us as something of a fool’s errand. It’s safe to say that any number of them would make for a perfectly beautiful place to hide away. Paros has its partisans, though, and from the vantage point of Parīlio, on the island’s northeast coast, it’s hard not to be won over to their view — in fact your hosts’ previous hotels are all on Santorini, so you know they’re a tough pair to impress.
Parīlio isn’t just an exemplary high-end, high-design boutique hotel, but an exemplary piece of Paros architecture, constructed in the local signature style — minimalist forms in whitewashed stone, decorated in soothing neutrals that complement the island’s landscape. The 33 suites are part modern, part classic, and for all their simplicity they feel warm, organic, and welcoming. At very least you’ll have a terrace with sunbeds; upgrade a bit and you’ll find yourself with a jacuzzi or a private pool.

Mytakas Triovasalou, Milos
Size: 16 rooms and suites
Style: Modern Design & Lively
Seasonal Operations: Property is closed during the winter season
Adults Only
If Greek-island luxury hospitality sometimes feels formulaic, it’s because the formula works: luxe accommodations, ocean views, Mediterranean flavors, and an atmosphere that’s laid all the way back. The best hotels in the genre excel because of the details, and in the case of Domes White Coast Milos it’s the modernist simplicity of the design that sets it apart, above all else; it looks fantastic, and it’s got everything else taken care of, from the private pools that come with each unit to the open-air restaurant on the terrace overlooking the ever-impressive Aegean seascape.

Lagkades, Agios Fokas, Tinos
Size: 3 rooms and suites
Style: Modern Design & Lively
Seasonal Operations: Property is closed during the winter season
A nearby alternative to busy Mykonos is the island of Tinos, practically undiscovered in mass-travel terms. And while Pnoēs Tinos will raise the island’s profile, it’s not likely to disturb the local tranquility — this ultra-stylish retreat comprises a mere three villas. They’re the work of the Greek firm Aristides Dallas Architects, and they’re a very modern evolution of the classic Cycladic white-on-white look, providing shelter from the midday sun and generous amplification of the morning and evening light. Each villa is a self-contained luxury experience, complete with private pool; common spaces are minimal, but there’s plenty to do nearby.

the island of Folegandros
Size: 27 rooms and suites
Style: Modern Design & Secluded
Seasonal Operations: Property is closed during the winter season
Rising up from the Aegean Sea between the Cycladic islands of Santorini, Milos, and Paros is the much less-frequented Folegandros. It’s known for its wild beauty and dramatic landscapes, and Gundari was designed to match the rugged scenery. Raw luxury is the guiding principle: this clifftop property itself is large and windswept, occupying 80 acres on the island’s southern coast. The resort’s low-lying architecture, sustainably built with rock excavated from the site, barely disrupts the contours of the land, and the interiors are outfitted in earth tones and natural materials, including stone, straw, and timber.
Onto the luxury part: despite the expansive grounds, the resort has just 27 suites and villas, and even the simplest option is remarkably roomy. Every suite has as much outdoor space as indoor, with sleeping and living areas opening seamlessly onto private terraces with infinity pools and staggering views of the sea. There’s lounge space for sunbathing or relaxing in the shade, not to mention outdoor rain showers for rinsing off afterward. The look may be nature-inspired, even rustic, but the bathrooms are marble and the sound system is first-rate; the designers bring a touch of urban gloss from Athens. Higher-level cave suites are even more impressive with their cliffside positions and extras like double rain showers, vintage turntables with records, and stocked cocktail bars for shaking up drinks by the pool. Villas come with extra-large infinity pools.
