Most likely one of the prettiest major airports I have been to. A beautiful design and extremely efficient. The first time I landed here, I could not wait to come back. And upon returning, it was a pleasure to spend a bit of extra time. Modern and warm inside. It is a very inviting environment to prepare for your journey.
In 2017, they opened the new Central Terminal to handle more international flights. This is where the exterior of the airport really shines. A circular domed shell encases the new terminal, slightly reminiscent of Bangkok’s BKK Suvarnabhumi Airport. And inside, the modern steel, tile & metal work, and glass is framed by warm wood paneling making it a very cozy airport. It really sets a wonderful welcoming to Oslo.
One thing you notice after a bit…the airport is so quiet. All the main airports of Norway, are intentionally “silent”. Meaning no announcements throughout the airport, only at the boarding gates, giving the main public spaces a total sense of calm. And billboards and advertising are almost nonexistent. It really improves the airport experience, and lends to a very tranquil time spent before or after a journey.
Flying in on an international flight (Shengen or non-Shengen), you will have to collect your luggage and clear customs before continuing on to any final destination… regardless if it is domestic or international, similar to the US. Not the best airport for an international transfer.
It is highly recommended that you use the Airport Express Train (Flytoget) if going into Oslo… only 19 minutes to the City Center, rather than the 45 minutes to hour and a half (or more) by auto or bus. Easy to use and find, and once downtown, there catch your taxi to your final destination.
The Radison Blue hotel within 5 minutes walking distance is very convenient for an early morning departure.
Location: 52 kilometers NE of Oslo City Center.
