This is generally considered the main tourist destination of the Dominican Republic (DR). Located on the South Eastern part of the DR, Punta Cana, Cap Cana and La Romana does have the main concentration of resorts and hotels. But not all are the all-inclusive resorts many associate with this region. It has a a few good high end options as well.
Punta Cana itself is a large land ownership, controling a large portion or beach and inland property south of the airport. Cap Cana fruther south is built around a series of golf courses, with the Resorts fanning out along the beach.
La Romana is actually a one company town. With the Central Romana Corporation owning extensive sugar cane farms, and other businesses in the surrounding area, they began to devlop a major resort complex, Casa de Campo, a Resort and Vacation Home mega-complex. With a Marina and small Shopping Center, it is a self-contained resort city.
About a 2 hour drive from Santo Domingo, the region is serviced by 2 major airports:
PUJ Punta Cana International Airport which boasts a swimming pool in their VIP Lounge area.
LRM La Romana International Airport was opened in 1999, to basically service the patrons of Casa de Campo and the Corporation.
The Punta Cana Resorts:
This is the best property in Punta Cana and part of the PuntaCana Resort & Club. I was skeptical about the Oscar de la Renta styling, but when I was there it worked and felt perfect. A very small and intimate hotel with excellent dining options. And of course there is access to the Six Senses Spa… the only one of it’s kind in North America.
There are a host of All-Inclusives north of the the airport.
and if all else fails, we can get you into the Westin and you still get access to all at the PuntaCana Resort & Club.
This is a Westin, clean and simple. But staying here gives you access to all the dining, golf and amenties offered with the main Punta Cana Resort & Club.
down the coast a bit is the Cap Cana region:
I had very mixed feelings with the original Villas and Residences, but the newer Beachfront Suites are extremely nice. And all the restaurants and the bar are quite excellent.
One of the nicest and longest beaches in the region, this new All-Inclusive has a lot to offer.
La Romana:
The largest Resort Complex in the Dominican Republic, and they offer almost everything. And Catalina Island Beach excursion makes a great holiday in itself. With the host of things to do here, a perfect Family getaway for the holidays.
Centro Comercial Downtown
Yes, this is the same Coco Bongo as in CanCun and Playa del Carmen. When you want that “Vacationer Gone Wild” Vibe, this is the place to go.
PuntaCana Resort & Club
For me, this was one of the big impressive reasons to come to Punta Cana. The world renowed Six Senses Spa having a a location in North America.
Part of the PuntaCana Resort & Club, a great excursion with natural fresh water swim ponds.
The area is full of Beach and Island Adventures. For those who seek fun, there is plenty to offer.
Make sure to get the VIP Airport Treatment and Lounge Access,
worth the extra treat, and may be part of your Hotel Package anyway.
